Hotel photography can be genuinely useful, but it is designed to show a property at its best. A photograph of a beautiful suite, lobby or rooftop does not necessarily explain what is included in the room you are about to book.
Look for the room-category name
Compare images attached to the exact category on your reservation: standard double, superior room, balcony room or suite. If the picture gallery mixes several room types, request the images or measurements of the selected category. A spacious lobby cannot tell you whether there is enough room to open two suitcases beside the bed.
Separate view from access
“Sea view,” “lake view” and “city view” can describe different angles, distances and levels of obstruction. A shared terrace may have the view shown in the advertisement even when the room does not. Ask whether the outlook is from the booked room’s own window or balcony, and whether it is guaranteed.
Understand the building
Historic properties can make memorable stays, but beautiful staircases are not a substitute for lift access. Look for information about floor level, steps at the entrance, whether a car can stop nearby, and the location of accessible facilities. In large properties, the distance from reception to the room can also matter.
Ask about everyday comfort
- Light: does the room have an exterior window, and can it be darkened?
- Sound: does it face a road, courtyard, venue or lift?
- Temperature: what heating or cooling is available for your dates?
- Bathroom: private or shared, shower or bathtub, with any unusual layout?
- Connectivity: is Wi-Fi included and is it available inside the room?
A short message to send the property
Hello, I am considering your [room category] for [dates]. Could you confirm whether the photos show this exact category, whether it has a lift-accessible route, which direction the window faces, and whether late check-in is available? Thank you.
The goal is not to find a flawless hotel. It is to compare what you will actually receive with what matters most to your stay — and to avoid surprises created by a beautifully edited picture gallery.
